Scientists at the National Institute of Agronomic Research in France have isolated a bacterium whose lack would be responsible for the disease of Crohn , a chronic intestinal inflammation for which there is still no definitive cure, BBC News reported .
Researchers have found that the specific lack Faecalibacterium prausnitzii bacteria in these patients is responsible for inflammation, and instead their presence helps to reduce it.
The cellular level experiments have shown that the liquid in which bacteria grows immunizing provides a shield that prevents and reduces inflammation. Scientists have announced that, if treatment is successful in animals, human patients could benefit from similar treatment with F. prausnitzii.
Dr. Anton Emmanuel, director of the Core Charity of digestive disorders, described the medical breakthrough of "exciting" and agrees that the arrival of a new therapy based on it would be an "important step".
